Garden sculpture, while accommodating content and technology, has overlooked the unique characteristics of local natural landscapes and regional cultures. The garden has been in operation for nearly a century and a half. Although China's garden development has made significant progress, it has never formed a modern garden culture with distinctive Chinese regional characteristics. Apart from socio-economic factors, another important reason is our one-sided belief that the root cause is without a source.
Therefore, to make progress in modern gardens, it is necessary to deeply study and refine the local characteristics of Chinese garden culture from traditional gardens, discard the historical limitations of traditional gardens, grasp the practical significance of traditional concepts, and integrate garden stone carvings into modern living environments.
In summary, the development trend of modern garden stone landscapes should be to inherit tradition, absorb the essence, complement strengths and compensate for weaknesses, addressing the shortcomings of Chinese gardens. It should combine the cultural connotations of Chinese culture with Western modern concepts, creating a unique Chinese characteristic of modern gardens while adhering to national culture. With a rigorous design approach, it should cater to the modern desire for closeness to nature, aiming for ecological benefits. By utilizing new materials and technologies, it should produce rock landscape works brimming with the spirit of the times. Elements should be closely integrated with other substances, fostering beautiful and vibrant natural landscapes, creating a fresh and tranquil environment, and radiating the brilliance of Chinese gardens.
When selecting carved stones, be cautious not to choose those with too many stone textures. As each landscape stone's formation environment and factors differ, the crystallization degrees of carved stone characters also vary. The stone surface of landscape stones is prone to cracking or characters being faint, with varying strengths in each type of crack effect, exuding an artistic aura. However, there are also drawbacks to hand carving, such as longer chisels and lower work efficiency. A standard hand-carved stone can take up to four to five days to complete. With the advancement of the times, hand chisels will be replaced by mechanical carving in all efficiency eras.
