Rainwater harvesting ponds are typically fully underground structures with considerable depth. They operate for a limited number of days throughout the year, serving their storage purpose only during rainy periods. Therefore, the operation modes of newly constructed rainwater harvesting ponds are usually unattended or minimally staffed with scheduled inspections. China has developed relatively late in the technology of rainwater harvesting pond utilization. Early rainwater harvesting ponds mainly had the "storage" function, lacking "adjustment" and "utilization" features, and are in urgent need of upgrades or supplementation.
Rainwater storage ponds are typically connected to municipal stormwater wells for the collection and storage of rainwater; they are equipped with drainage pumps and level gauges. The drainage pumps are connected to the municipal stormwater pipes through drainage pipes, used to pump the stored rainwater into the municipal stormwater pipes during rainfall.
