Outdoor advertising, as we all know, refers to billboards placed outdoors to showcase promotional content to passing local consumers, thereby boosting consumption. Generally, there are two types of outdoor advertising: flat and three-dimensional. Flat outdoor advertising typically includes advertising lightboxes, posters, banners, etc., while three-dimensional outdoor advertising generally encompasses advertising triangular towers, spirit forts, outdoor brands, and more.
What Principles Should Outdoor Advertising Design Follow?
Simplicity is a key principle in outdoor advertising design. The target audience for outdoor ads is pedestrians in motion. Most outdoor ads are read for only a few seconds. Viewers have a great deal of imaginative space. Remember, consumer attention to ads is inversely proportional to the amount of information on the screen. The more complex the visuals, the more chaotic viewers may find them; the simpler the images, the higher the value of consumer attention.
In terms of text—advertising copy plays a crucial role in outdoor advertising, where good copy can add the final touch. Its design differs from that of advertising copy in newspapers, magazines, and other media. Outdoor advertising copy aims to be concise and impactful, often highlighting a key message in a sentence and followed by brief, powerful explanations and text. The title design typically should not exceed ten characters; seven or eight characters are ideal, as longer titles can diminish readability.
Avoid using overly thick or thin fonts, as thick fonts can become blurry from a distance, and thin fonts may not be visible. If English words are used, try not to capitalize all letters; instead, use a mix of uppercase and lowercase for easier readability from afar.
In terms of color - try using simple or contrasting hues. From a color theory perspective, complementary and contrasting colors are both excellent choices.
Graphical Elements – In outdoor advertising, graphics draw attention, making graphic design crucial. In flat design, strive for simplicity, prominence, creativity, and great outdoor advertising concepts.
