Currently, flocculants and modified cassava starch are widely used as retention aids in the papermaking industry, but their actual effectiveness only reaches a certain level. They improve water filtration but may cause excessive fiber aggregation, thereby reducing the uniformity and compressive strength of the printed paper. The use of pure natural guar gum in the papermaking industry can enhance the compressive strength of the printed paper, reduce the formation of gray spots, and improve the page uniformity.
Guar gum does have the drawback of being difficult to filter, hence limiting production or increasing dry load. Chemically modified anionic or cationic guar gum largely eliminates this issue. Results show that the modified guar gum can maintain or enhance the uniformity of printing paper, as well as improve its water filtration properties; further enhancing filtration properties and increasing retention rate by adsorbing fine fibers and particles.

Guar gum, also known as Guar bean gum or Gum tragacanth, is one of the more affordable and widely used edible gels internationally. It is a polysaccharide compound derived from the seeds of the guar tree. Guar gum is a natural, high-molecular-weight hydrophilic colloid, primarily composed of galactose and mannose polymers. It is a natural galactomannan, known for its stable source, relatively low cost, high viscosity, and broad applications as a food gel. It is also a common food quality improver.
Modified Guar Gum Applications in Papermaking
During the papermaking process, excessive use of starch additives can result in paper sheets becoming harder and increase the COD and BOD load of the white water. Mixing modified guar gum (cationic or neutral) with colloidal silica in proper proportions is a good papermaking strengthener for papermaking aid retention manufacturers, which also significantly enhances the retention and filtration aid effects. Adding colloidal silica in stages can greatly improve the strength and other properties of the paper sheets, but the most significant improvement is in the retention rate of fine fibers and fillers.

Modified Guar Gum Applications in Papermaking
Pre-mix cationic guar gum and cationic starch in a specific ratio, then use after gelatinization.
The enhancement of cationic starch and the retention and filtration assistance of cationic guar gum are all effectively utilized. Compared to using the two additives separately without pre-mixing, the strength improves by about 20%. More importantly, it eliminates the drawbacks of dust (guar powder) from the use of cationic guar gum alone, as well as its high water consumption.
