Flatbed Trailer

Features

Self-propelled, independent-bearing vehicle, propelled by being towed by other vehicles.

Variety

There are many types of full trailers, with their basic frames, bodies, and running systems largely similar to those of trucks. The flat-sided trailers are typically made of thin steel plates, with longitudinal grooved plates pressed onto the trailer sides and transversely welded ribs to enhance rigidity and reduce weight. The floor of the trailer is usually made of wood and covered with thin steel plates, or a composite iron-wood structure floor is used. The frame is commonly made of 16Mn steel plates, formed into sections and welded or bolted together. The longitudinal and transverse beams of the frame often use channel-shaped interface structures, with two longitudinal beams evenly spaced front to back, providing the frame with good bending resistance.

Composition

A trailer typically consists of the frame, body, towing device, steering mechanism, suspension, running gear, braking system, and signaling system. The upper flange of the straight-beam frame is flat. Its advantages include a level trailer bed, simple manufacturing process, high ground clearance, and good longitudinal passage. Heavy-duty flatbed trailers are designed to meet their structural and operational requirements. The frame is mainly composed of main beams, cross beams, support beams, and side beams. The entire vehicle's load is transferred to the ground through support beams between cross beams, suspension, wheel axles, and wheels. The frame's main beams, support beams, and side beams are welded box-section components with high torsional stiffness. The cross beams connected to the main beams extend outward to form an I-shaped welded structure with high lateral bending strength. The height dimension of the frame's main beams is large and extends downward, thereby enhancing the frame's longitudinal bending strength without increasing the bed height. Under each support beam, there is a pivot mechanism for installing a balanced suspension to enable full-wheel steering.

The cargo transported by heavy trailers is both heavy and large in dimensions. Generally speaking, it is advisable to enhance the frame's strength and minimize the frame's height for easier loading, unloading, and transportation of the goods. The trailer frames are categorized based on the structure of their longitudinal beams, including through-type frames, stepped frames, and V-shaped frames.
