Piano is a course that many children need to study deeply, and whether the standard of initial piano learning is professional can have a profound impact on future piano studies. From the very first time beginners encounter the piano, they require proper guidance. They should establish long-term learning goals and short-term study plans, starting from the basics and progressing gradually. Here is an introduction to basic piano knowledge. We hope those in need will read it carefully.

Fingering is a fundamental skill in piano playing, holding an indispensable position in practice. Proper fingering can fully utilize the characteristics of each finger, better train the playing ability of the fingers, reduce technical difficulties, and make the performance regular, logical, and orderly, significantly enhancing the efficiency of learning the piano.

1. Follow the direction

The thumb position is a basic technique in piano playing, also known as the natural position. The fingers are naturally arranged without any gaps, neither stretched nor compressed. The five fingers are distributed over the corresponding keys, producing the five notes do, re, mi, fa, so. The "Beyer Piano Fundamental Course" from 1-62 and the "Chopin 599" from 1-18 primarily utilize the thumb position technique.

2. Finger Technique

The picking technique requires the use of only one finger (the thumb) to pick, and it can only be used for two, three, or four fingers. When using the picking technique, be mindful not to use one finger to pick all five fingers; picking all five fingers is a taboo. For instance, when the melody in the right hand ascends continuously, use the picking technique to move to the right position to play higher notes, ensuring the melody is played smoothly and continuously. During practice, the technique of using one finger to pick two or three fingers is more frequently used than using one finger to pick four fingers.

3. Cross-finger technique

The Cross Fingering technique involves "crossing the thumb," which is the opposite of the Pinch Fingering. It divides the second string into two parts. By moving the 2, 3, and 4 fingers with the thumb, for instance, when the right hand moves leftward in a continuous motion and plucks downward notes, it produces lower tones. A taboo to avoid is using all five fingers to cross over one finger; instead, try to let the fingers actively cross over one another, allowing the wrist and arm to naturally follow the finger movement.

4. Expansion technique

Extended finger technique involves extending five fingers to play a sixth or higher interval. The thumb and index finger's web is a favorable condition for an extended hand shape, with one or two keys between the 1st and 2nd fingers, and so on. Adjacent fingers can be played using the extended finger method, usually avoiding an extension of more than three notes between the 3rd and 4th, or 4th and 5th fingers. Both black and white keys can be extended, of course, while ensuring ease of playing during the extension.

5. Pinch Technique

The opposite technique is the expansion method. The hand shape contracts horizontally. A technique where the sum of the two fingers touching the keys and the one between them is greater than the pitch interval of the two keys to be touched is also used for playing notes with pitch intervals less than a fifth. However, remember not to contract adjacent fingers. It is more common to have adjacent fingers like the 1st and 3rd, or the 1st and 4th. There are various forms of the contraction technique. Regardless of the form, the contraction technique is used to ensure the continuity of melody playing, relying on the relaxation and clenching movements of the palm. Do not leave keys or skip them during the performance.
