The European Union officially published the revised Directive (EU) 2022/2380 on universal chargers in the Official Journal (OJ) on December 7, 2022, to supplement the specific implementation requirements for universal charging interfaces under Article 3.3(a) of Directive 2014/53/EU (RED).
The revised directive covers 13 categories of wireless devices, including mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headphones with microphones, handheld gaming consoles, portable speakers, e-books, keyboards, mice, portable navigation devices, in-ear headphones, and laptops.
The new directive will be enforced across all EU member states starting December 28, 2024. Requirements for laptop devices will be mandatory as of December 28, 2026. All new devices entering the EU market after the enforcement date must comply with the directive.
