Extend the lifespan of diesel generator sets

Diesel generator sets have a certain service life. How can you operate them to extend their service life? We have compiled some common operating tips that we hope will be helpful to you.

1. Engine starting battery malfunction

Battery not maintained for extended periods, with electrolyte moisture evaporating without timely replenishment, no starting battery charger provided, battery discharges naturally over time leading to reduced charge, or the charger used requires manual periodic switching between equalizing/float charging. Neglecting to perform this switch results in battery charge falling short of requirements. To resolve this issue, in addition to using a high-quality charger, necessary testing and maintenance are essential.

2. Water entering the diesel engine

Due to condensation caused by water vapor in the air changing temperature, water droplets form and adhere to the inner wall of the fuel tank, flowing into the diesel, resulting in excessive water content in the diesel. This diesel entering the engine's high-pressure fuel pump can rust the precision plunger coupling parts, and in severe cases, can damage the equipment. Regular maintenance can effectively prevent this.

3. Oil Change Interval

Engine oil serves as mechanical lubrication, and it also has a certain shelf life. Over time, the physical and chemical properties of the oil can change, leading to deterioration in lubrication conditions during operation, which can easily cause damage to the components of the unit. Therefore, it is necessary to regularly replace the lubricating oil.

4. Replacement Cycle for the Three Filters (Fuel Filter, Oil Filter, Air Filter, Water Filter): Filters play a crucial role in filtering diesel, engine oil, or water to prevent impurities from entering the engine. Since oil and impurities are inevitable in diesel, the filters are essential during the operation of the unit. However, over time, these impurities accumulate on the filter mesh walls, reducing the filter's efficiency. Excessive accumulation can lead to clogged oil lines, causing the oil machine to shut down due to insufficient oil supply, akin to human asphyxiation. Therefore, we recommend for normal generator sets: replace the three filters every 500 operating hours for regular units; and replace the three filters for standby units.

5. Cooling System

Pumps, water tanks, and water supply pipes have not been cleaned for an extended period, leading to poor water circulation and reduced cooling efficiency. Issues such as the integrity of pipe joints, leaks in the water tank or channels should be checked. If there are faults in the cooling system, the consequences may include: 1. Inadequate cooling causing the internal water temperature of the unit to rise excessively and resulting in shutdown, a common issue with Weil-McLain units; 2. Water tank leaks causing the water level inside the tank to drop, which can also lead to the unit failing to operate normally (To prevent pipes from freezing when using generators during winter, we recommend installing a water heater in the cooling system).

6. Lubrication Systems, Sealing Components

Due to the chemical properties of lubricants or oils and the iron shavings produced by mechanical wear, these not only reduce its lubricating effect but also accelerate the damage to parts. Additionally, as lubricants have a certain corrosive effect on rubber seals, the oil seals themselves also age over time, further diminishing their sealing effectiveness.

Fuel and Gas Distribution System

The engine's power output primarily results from the combustion of fuel within the cylinders, which is ejected through injectors. This leads to carbon deposits on the injectors after combustion, affecting the fuel injection rate as the deposits accumulate. Consequently, the timing of the injector's ignition angle becomes inaccurate, causing uneven fuel injection across the engine cylinders and an unstable operating state. Therefore, regular cleaning of the fuel system, replacement of filter components to ensure smooth fuel supply, and adjustment of the valve timing for uniform ignition are necessary.
