Recently, many people have been inquiring with Yin Xiaomei about the sizes of illuminated letters on different floors and what to pay attention to in the design and production of illuminated letters. Many clients believe that larger-sized illuminated letters on the rooftop are better, but in reality, this is not the case. We need to consider various factors comprehensively: cost, load-bearing elements, and on-site geographical conditions, among others. How to determine the size of the letters is a common concern for advertisers and designers.
Note 1:
The number of characters on the rooftop is determined by the floor height, typically as follows:
6 floors and below, less than 2 meters, 1.2-1.5 meters
2nd to 6th floors, 1.5 to 2 meters, 1.8 meters
3rd-10th-15th floors, 2-2.2 meters, 2.2 meters
4th to 20th floor, 2.2 to 2.5 meters, 2.5 meters
20-40 stories, 2.5-3.5 meters, 3.5 meters
Over 40 stories, over 3.5 meters, 4 meters
Generally, characters over 4 meters are rare, and it's not advisable to use acrylic flat light-up letters for such large sizes; instead, perforated light-up letters are more suitable.
Note 2:
The word count for the rooftop signage has been confirmed.
Many rooftop signs, not too tall in floors, require a lot of text (it's suggested not to have too much text on rooftop letters, keep it short and impactful, just to convey the advertising message), such as phone numbers, and company English (recommend sparingly, as it doesn't add much meaning unless the company logo is necessary, and overall aesthetics should also be considered). This demands that we refer to small text, as making small letters too small becomes unreadable and loses the value of the advertisement. In summary, achieving recognizable small words, generally a phone number can be identified from about 300 meters away.
Note 3:
The method to determine the number of characters for the rooftop sign is to make a reference.
1. The design is simple and references the human form: imagine a person standing on an upper floor, looking down, with the person at the rooftop spreading their arms to gauge the strokes of the characters.
First, print the text on the canvas and then unfold it at the rooftop position for better reference.
3. Suggest initially using inexpensive advertising materials to carve the text, creating a one-to-one text matching effect.
Note 4:
The actual site conditions are the fundamental factor determining the size of the site characters, and site conditions are a significant factor in determining the size of the building characters.
The width of the building, since most top-mounted illuminated letters are horizontally arranged (vertical arrangement increases stress and advertising costs), the spacing and number of characters in a horizontal line determine the maximum character count, which is to say, how large of a character size can you accommodate?
2. The rooftop structure: Most rooftop structures lack pre-buried load-bearing points, meaning they were not designed for rooftop illuminated letters. The steel structure for the rooftop illuminated letters cannot be welded to the building's top (since the top floor cannot prevent water leakage). In other words, the load-bearing points of the steel structure are held down with stones.
Weight > Wind, hence rooftop letters are safe, especially in coastal cities where typhoons are a concern. Safety is a fundamental prerequisite.
Note 5:
Ad Spend Limitations
Cost-effective advertising can yield better ad results, aligning with the interests considered by businesses. Therefore, advertising costs limit our advertising budget. Consequently, budget considerations must be taken into account before designing or determining font size.
In these five aspects, we can basically address the issue of the size of rooftop letters, but we still need to consider what type of letters or illuminated letters to use. For instance, letters over 2.5 meters in height, it is advisable not to use acrylic illuminated letters. Not only do they require the assembly of acrylic panels, but they are also very costly and have high maintenance rates. Visual factors, such as the location and angle of the coverage, also need to be considered. Rooftop letters are not just simple advertising production; they are an advertising project. Therefore, it is crucial to choose a reliable advertising agency.
