It is an easily machinable martensitic stainless steel that can be strengthened through heat treatment. The strength and machinability of 416 are better than 304 and 316, with a lower friction coefficient, but less corrosion resistance. Chemical composition of 416 stainless steel (%): Carbon C: ≤0.15, Manganese Mn: ≤1.25, Silicon Si: ≤1.00, Chromium Cr: 12.0~14.0, Nickel Ni: up to 0.60%, Phosphorus P: ≤0.06, Sulfur S: ≥0.15, Molybdenum Mo: up to 0.60%. Equivalent grades: US: 416, UK: 416S21, France: Z12CF13. Characteristics of 416 stainless steel: 1. Machinability is about 85% of free-cutting carbon steel among all stainless steels. 2. Corrosion resistance is lower than 1Cr13; highly resistant to typical atmospheric environments, with corrosion resistance achieved through hardening and polishing. 3. Good hardenability, can be heat treated to HR0; nitriding can achieve higher hardness. 4. High sulfur content; not recommended for high-temperature use. 5. Not recommended for use below freezing.
