17-7PH is a semi-austenitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel derived by adding Al to the 18-8 Austenitic stainless steel, and it belongs to the high-strength stainless steel series. Not only does 17-7PH exhibit excellent machinability in the solution-treated state, but it also boasts high strength and good corrosion resistance after martensitic transformation and aging, making it widely used in the aerospace manufacturing sector. However, the heat treatment process for this steel is extremely complex, posing significant difficulties for production.
17-7PH precipitation-hardening stainless steel wire, after solution heat treatment, forms an unstable austenitic structure with good ductility and workability. Adjustments cause changes in the composition during the precipitation of carbides in the austenite, followed by martensitic transformation treatment. Most of the structure then transforms into tougher, low-carbon tempered martensite, which is the steel's service condition, exhibiting excellent medium-temperature mechanical properties. Its corrosion resistance is superior to that of general martensitic stainless steels.
17-7PH is a semi-austenitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel. Due to its low Ms point, it cannot directly transform into martensite upon cooling after solution heat treatment, so an intermediate treatment is required (adjusting the austenite, raising the Ms point, or cold working to convert it into martensite), followed by aging treatment. Depending on the intermediate treatment process, the heat treatment of 17-7PH is divided into three main categories: TH treatment, RH treatment, and CH treatment. Typically, for convenience, the aging treatment temperature is written after TH, RH, or CH (in the U.S., Fahrenheit values are used, while in China, Celsius values are used), forming the representation method for the 17-7PH heat treatment process.
