904L super-austenitic stainless steel contains 14.0-18.0% chromium, 24.0-26.0% nickel, and 4.5% molybdenum. It is a low-carbon, high-nickel and molybdenum austenitic acid-resistant stainless steel. It boasts excellent activation-passivation transition capabilities, good corrosion resistance, and excellent resistance to corrosion in non-oxidizing acids such as sulfuric, acetic, formic, and phosphoric acids. It also exhibits excellent resistance to pitting corrosion in neutral chloride-containing media, along with good resistance to crevice and stress corrosion. Suitable for various concentrations of sulfuric acid below 70°C, it resists any concentration and temperature of acetic acid under atmospheric pressure, and also maintains good corrosion resistance in mixtures of acetic and formic acids.
Microstructure of 904L stainless steel:
904L is a fully austenitic structure, and compared to general austenitic stainless steels with high molybdenum content, 904L is insensitive to the precipitation of ferrite and α phases.
Physical and mechanical properties of 904L stainless steel:
Density: 8.0 g/cm³.
Tensile Strength: σb≥520 MPa.
Tensile elongation: δ≥35%.
Machining properties of 904L:
The machinability features of 904L are similar to other austenitic stainless steels; there is a tendency for galling and work hardening during the machining process. Positive rake carbide tools are required, with sulfur and chloride oils used as cutting and cooling fluids. The equipment and process should aim to minimize work hardening. Avoid slow cutting speeds and feed rates during the cutting process.
