Highly absorbent resin, also known as water retention agents and soil conditioners, is used in agriculture and horticulture. As China is one of the countries with severe water scarcity, the application of water retention agents has become increasingly important. Currently, more than a dozen research institutions in China have developed highly absorbent resin products for application trials on over 60 types of crops, including grain, cotton, oil, sugar, tobacco, fruit, vegetables, and forestry, with a total area of over 70,000 hectares. Large-scale sand prevention and afforestation projects in the northwestern and Inner Mongolia regions have also utilized highly absorbent resin. The main types of highly absorbent resin used in this field are starch-grafted acrylic acid polymer cross-linking substances and acrylamide-acrylic acid copolymer cross-linking substances, with the salt type shifting from sodium to potassium. Application methods include seed mixing, spraying, hole application, or soaking plant roots after mixing with water into a paste. Additionally, highly absorbent resin can be used to coat urea fertilizer for application via hydraulic steel dams, maximizing fertilizer utilization and preventing waste and pollution. Abroad, highly absorbent resin is also used as packaging material for fruit, vegetables, and food preservation.
