Safety Precautions for Confined Space Operations
Clearing septic tanks and grease traps is classified as confined space operations.

Workers conducting operations in confined spaces should adhere toThe 1997 Limited Spaces Work Regulations stipulate that "No person shall enter a limited space for work purposes unless it is not reasonably practicable to achieve the purpose without entering the limited space." Whenever possible, work should be conducted on the ground. When working in limited spaces, safe working conditions must be provided for the workers, including the provision of ventilation, minimizing the number of required personnel, and the use of breathing apparatus and safety equipment. The Health and Safety Guidance GS5 "Entering Limited Spaces: Hazards and Protection" provides a detailed explanation of the operational procedures and legal requirements when entering limited spaces for work. These requirements must be adhered to.

Employees working in confined spaces must receive training; generally, an operational permit from the owner of the wastewater pipeline is required to enter manholes or inspection rooms. In such cases, the person responsible for approving the operation should possess sufficient judgment to determine if the space can be safely entered and if respiratory equipment is necessary. It is crucial that no one remains inside the wastewater pipeline or manhole during flushing operations.
