The use of steel corrugated pipe culverts requires minimal ground conditions. As the steel corrugated pipe culvert is a flexible structure, its foundation is typically flexible as well. The settlement of the culvert foundation is uniform with the embankment settlement on both sides, eliminating the need for special treatment. During the culvert construction process, the principle for the steel corrugated pipe's base is to treat the subgrade as the culvert foundation is treated. However, reinforced concrete arch culverts have higher requirements for ground bearing capacity. Culverts with a crown fill height greater than 12m usually require a ground bearing capacity of over 500kPa. In the southern region, where soft soil is widely distributed, the ground bearing capacity often fails to meet the requirements for arch culverts. A strong ground treatment plan is necessary to enhance the bearing capacity of the ground. Even after treatment, uneven settlement may still occur, potentially leading to cracking in the arch culvert.
The steel corrugated pipe is convenient for construction. The production of steel corrugated pipes, pipe assembly, and civil engineering construction can be carried out simultaneously, significantly shortening the construction period. The weight of the steel corrugated pipe is only 10% to 20% of the weight of cement products. On-site hoisting and assembly typically require only 2-3 weeks, involving fewer personnel and machinery. The construction of reinforced concrete arch culverts usually takes several months, requiring a large amount of manpower and materials. Additionally, shortening the construction period can also ensure the project is delivered earlier, reducing public dissatisfaction caused by construction. It offers better cost-effectiveness. Calculations show that the average cost per meter of the steel corrugated pipe we commonly use is about 3,000 yuan lower than that of the same-sized arch culvert, and the cross-sections with higher backfill heights often have longer culverts. Therefore, using steel corrugated pipe culverts can save a significant amount of costs. When considering the construction convenience of steel corrugated pipe culverts and potential savings in ground treatment, the cost-effectiveness becomes even more impressive.
Steel corrugated pipe is relatively environmentally friendly and low-carbon, as it can reduce or eliminate the use of conventional construction materials like cement and sandstone, benefiting environmental protection with significant ecological significance.
