A DC torque motor is a special type of brushless permanent magnet synchronous motor, as the load is directly connected to the rotor, no transmission components are required, making the torque motor a direct drive technology. The torque motor is also known as a "frameless" motor, meaning it has no housing, bearings, or measuring system. These components are selected by the machine manufacturer based on the required performance or purchased as a complete set.

The torque motor employs a permanent magnet brushless motor design, consisting of a ring-shaped stator and a ring-shaped rotor. The stator does not use a toothed lamination design but is instead composed of smooth, cylindrical laminations. The rotor is made up of multi-pole rare earth permanent magnet poles and a ring-shaped hollow shaft. This structure is characterized by a larger air gap and a uniformly distributed magnetic reluctance throughout the entire working air gap, thereby endowing the motor with the advantage of zero-slot torque.
