The Differences Between PAM and PAC & Their Application Scenarios In the crucial field of wastewater treatment, flocculants play an indispensable role. PAM (polyacrylamide) and PAC (polyaluminum chloride) are two commonly used flocculants, both dedicated to water purification, yet they display significant differences in various aspects. Firstly, in terms of nature and color, PAC is an inorganic substance, typically appearing yellow or brownish due to its iron powder content. In contrast, PAM is an organic polymer compound, usually found as a white powder. In terms of flocculation mechanisms, PAC primarily functions through sweeping action. Upon entering the water, it quickly forms a mesh-like structure, akin to a fishing net, effectively capturing solid particles in the water, thereby achieving preliminary purification of wastewater. PAM's flocculation mechanism is more complex, utilizing both electrical neutralization and bridging flocculation to disrupt the electrical balance between particles, causing them to adsorb onto each other and form larger flocs, which are then easier to settle and separate. Regarding dosage and methods, PAC requires a relatively high dosage, typically 200-300mg per liter of wastewater. Before use, it must be diluted to a 10-20% solution to ensure even dispersion in water for optimal performance. PAM, however, requires a lower dosage, only 3-10mg per liter of wastewater. Similar to PAC, it must also be diluted before use, but at a lower concentration, ranging from 0.1% to 0.3%. It is crucial to add PAM slowly to prevent pipe blockages and ensure treatment effectiveness. In terms of storage conditions, PAC is relatively simple to store, requiring only dry, well-ventilated conditions. PAM, on the other hand, requires more attention to avoid high temperatures, humidity, and iron ions, as these factors can lead to degradation and reduced effectiveness. Now let's examine their application scenarios. PAC is primarily used for primary wastewater treatment, where it quickly aggregates suspended solids in wastewater, reducing water turbidity. Therefore, it plays a crucial role in urban wastewater treatment plants and industrial wastewater treatment. PAM, typically used as a secondary treatment agent, can further remove fine suspended particles and organic matter from wastewater. When used in conjunction with PAC, PAM can significantly enhance wastewater treatment efficiency and is widely applied in urban wastewater treatment, industrial wastewater treatment, and drinking water purification. Understanding and correctly utilizing the characteristics of PAM and PAC are crucial for improving wastewater treatment outcomes and achieving environmental protection goals. Only by selecting the appropriate flocculant based on different wastewater treatment needs, and mastering its correct usage and storage conditions, can we fully leverage their advantages and contribute more significantly to environmental protection efforts.
