Chemical Cleaning Scale Removal Process

Recirculating Closed Loop Cleaning

Recirculating cleaning utilizes two existing parallel deslagging pipelines to form a circuit, creating a recirculation system with the cleaning pump station. A certain concentration of acidic solution is added, which circulates through the sludge water pipes for cleaning. As the acid washing reaches a certain level, acidic solution is continuously replenished. For short-distance single sludge water pipelines, if conditions permit, a temporary pipeline can be laid to form a recirculation circuit for cleaning. This process must be carried out while the system is shut down, and it is complex and costly.

Open Channel Cleaning

No two grey pipes should form a loop during cleaning; only a single grey pipe should be used for open-circuit cleaning. The method involves connecting one end of the grey pipe to the cleaning unit, continuously preparing a specific concentration of cleaning solution in the mixing tank, and then continuously or intermittently injecting it into the grey pipe. This process requires additional cleaning equipment during shutdown, which increases costs.

Continuous cleaning without shutdown

The process involves continuously injecting a certain amount of acidic solution while the ash pipe is operating normally and not shut down, concurrently introducing a specific quantity of ash pipe operation cleaning inhibitor and pipeline descaling agent. This is an open-circuit cleaning method. The primary role of the cleaning additive is to promote the reaction between the acidic solution and the ash scale at a certain concentration and flow rate, while also increasing its solubility in water and reducing the formation of airlock, ensuring the quality of ash pipe cleaning.

The procedure is as follows: Before cleaning, first estimate the required acid amount based on the total scale in the pipeline. Then, calculate the acid addition rate and the flow rate of the descaling agent and pipeline cleaner by considering the sludge water flow rate and acidity. During cleaning, take a sample at the front end of the sludge pipe every 30 minutes to test the acidity and strictly control it by adjusting the acid flow rate. In the later stage of cleaning, take a sample at the end of the sludge pipe every 15 minutes to test the pH value. When the pH value reaches a certain level and remains unchanged for 30 minutes, the cleaning can be deemed complete.

2. High-pressure water jet cleaning equipment
High-pressure water jet cleaning offers advantages such as high efficiency, low cost, non-damaging to workpieces, environmental-friendly, easy operation, and safety.
High-pressure water technology boasts the following advantages.

(1) Excellent Cleaning Quality - The high-pressure water jet cleaning for pipes and the inner holes of heat exchangers can thoroughly remove scale and obstructions from within the pipes, revealing the metal substrate. The high-pressure water jet, with its immense energy and ultra-sonic speed, can completely destroy hard scales and obstructions without causing any damage to the metal.

Since the pressure of high-pressure water is less than the compressive strength grade of metal, high-pressure cleaning will not damage the base material being cleaned.

(2) Fast Cleaning Speed: Due to the combined actions of water jet scouring, wedge splitting, shearing, and abrasion, scaling can be quickly broken and removed, which is several to ten times faster than traditional chemical methods, sandblasting and shot peening techniques, simple mechanical, and manual cleaning methods.

Components cleaned with high-pressure water jetting do not require secondary cleaning; however, after chemical cleaning, the surface must be washed with clean water.

(3) No Environmental Pollution: As high-pressure water jet cleaning uses pure water as the medium, it does not produce large amounts of dust like sandblasting or simple mechanical cleaning, which can pollute the atmosphere and harm health. It also does not generate a significant amount of waste liquid like some chemical cleaning methods, which can contaminate rivers, soil, and water quality. The water jet, using pure water, is odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic. After atomization, it can also reduce the dust concentration in the work area, lowering atmospheric dust from 80mg/m³ using other methods to below the national safety standards, thus causing no pollution.


3. Pipe Scale

(1) Classified by chemical composition, it can be divided into carbonate scale, sulfate scale, silicate scale, and mixed scale, etc. The main components of carbonate scale are calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate; the main components of sulfate scale and silicate scale are calcium sulfate and silicate compounds, respectively.

(2) Categorized by physical properties, there are two types: hard scale that firmly adheres to the pot shell and pipe walls, and soft sediment that is loose and easily detachable.
Scale primarily forms due to the salts like calcium and magnesium in the boiler feed water, which precipitate and adhere to the metal surface upon heating. The thermal conductivity of scale is very low, around 2 to 5 times that of ordinary steel. Scale on the boiler's heat-absorbing surface greatly worsens the heat transfer efficiency and affects the boiler's performance; it can easily cause metal materials to burn due to localized overheating, potentially leading to pipe explosion accidents; it also accelerates galvanic corrosion, causing pipeline scale corrosion and speeding up the damage to the heat-absorbing surface. Once scale forms, it should be promptly removed using mechanical or chemical methods.
