Chemical Cleaning Scale Removal Process

Recirculating closed-loop cleaning

Recirculating cleaning utilizes two existing parallel descaling pipelines to form a loop, creating a circulating system with the cleaning pump station. A solution of a certain acidity is added, which circulates within the sludge water pipeline for cleaning. Additionally, as the acidity wash decreases to a certain level, acid is continuously replenished. For short-distance single sludge water pipelines, if conditions permit, a temporary pipeline can be laid to form a circulating loop for cleaning. This process must be carried out during shutdown, is complex, and has a high cost.

Open path cleaning

During cleaning, no two ash pipes should form a loop; only a single ash pipe should be used for open-circuit cleaning. The method involves connecting one end of the ash pipe to the cleaning unit, continuously preparing a certain concentration of cleaning solution in the solution tank, and injecting it into the ash pipe continuously or intermittently. This process requires adding cleaning equipment during shutdown, resulting in higher costs.

Continuous cleaning without shutdown

The process involves continuously injecting a certain amount of acidic solution while operating the ash conveying pipeline, simultaneously introducing a specific quantity of ash conveying pipeline cleaning inhibitor and pipeline cleaning descaler for open circuit cleaning. The primary function of the cleaning aids is to promote the reaction between the acidic solution and ash deposits at a certain concentration and flow rate, while also enhancing its solubility in water and reducing the formation of air blockages, ensuring the quality of ash pipe cleaning.

The procedure is as follows: Before cleaning, estimate the required acid amount based on the total scale in the pipeline, then calculate the acid addition rate and the flow rate for the sludge transfer line based on the gray water flow rate and acidity. During cleaning, take samples at the front sampling point of the gray pipe every 30 minutes to test the acidity and strictly control it by adjusting the acid flow rate. In the later stages of cleaning, test the pH value at the end of the gray pipe every 15 minutes. When the pH value reaches a certain level and remains unchanged for 30 minutes, the cleaning can be considered complete.

2. High-pressure water jet cleaning equipment
High-pressure water jet cleaning offers advantages such as high efficiency, low cost, non-damaging to workpieces, environmental friendliness, ease of operation, and safety.
The high-pressure water technology offers the following advantages.

(1) Excellent Cleaning Quality - The high-pressure water jet cleaning of pipelines and heat exchanger bores can remove all scale and obstructions from inside the pipes, revealing the metal substrate. With its immense energy and supersonic speed, the high-pressure water jet is fully capable of destroying hard scales and obstructions without causing any damage to the metal.

Since the pressure of high-pressure water is less than the compressive strength grade of metal, high-pressure cleaning will not damage the base material being cleaned.

(2) Fast Cleaning Speed: Due to the combined fracturing effects of water jet washing, wedging, shearing, and grinding, scale can be quickly broken and removed, several to ten times faster than traditional chemical methods, sandblasting and shot peening techniques, simple mechanical, and manual cleaning methods.

Additionally, parts cleaned with high-pressure water jetting do not require secondary cleaning; however, after chemical cleaning, the surface must be rinsed with clean water.

(3) No Environmental Pollution: Since high-pressure water jet cleaning uses pure water as the medium, it does not generate a large amount of dust like sandblasting, shot blasting, or simple mechanical cleaning, which can pollute the atmosphere and harm health. It also does not produce a significant amount of waste liquid like some chemical cleaning methods, which can contaminate rivers, soil, and water quality. The water jet cleaning with pure water as the medium is odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic. After atomization, it can also reduce the dust concentration in the work area, lowering atmospheric dust from 80mg/m³ with other methods to below the national safety standards, thus causing no pollution.

3. Pipe Scale

(1) Categorized by chemical composition, they include carbonate scale, sulfate scale, silicate scale, and mixed scale, etc. The main components of carbonate scale are calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate; the main components of sulfate scale and silicate scale are calcium sulfate and silicate compounds, respectively.

(2) Categorized by physical properties, there are two types: scale that is firmly adhered to the pot shell and tube walls, and sediment that is loosely textured and easily detached.
Scale primarily forms due to the salts of calcium and magnesium in the boiler feedwater that precipitate and adhere to the metal surface upon heating. The thermal conductivity of scale is very low, around 2 to 5 times that of ordinary steel. When scale accumulates on the boiler's heating surface, it severely deteriorates the heat transfer efficiency, affecting the boiler's performance; it also tends to burn through the metal due to localized overheating, potentially leading to tube burst accidents; it accelerates galvanic corrosion, causing pipeline scale corrosion, and speeds up the damage to the heating surface. Once scale forms, it should be promptly removed using either mechanical or chemical methods.
