HEDP is widely used in industrial circulating cooling water systems for power, chemical, metallurgical, and fertilizer industries, as well as in medium and low-pressure boilers, oilfield injection water, and oil pipeline corrosion inhibition and scale prevention. In the light and textile industry, it can be used as a cleaner for metals and non-metals, and as a chelating dispersant in the dyeing and printing industry. It is also an excellent metal ion chelating agent for stabilizing peroxides in dyeing and bleaching industries and as a complexing agent in cyanide-free electroplating. As a scale inhibitor, it is typically used at concentrations of 1~10 mg/L, and as a corrosion inhibitor, 10~50 mg/L. It is usually used in conjunction with polyacrylic acid-based scale and corrosion inhibitors. In the building materials industry, it is used as a concrete retardant.
