Four Aspects Explain Why Gearboxes Leak Oil. We all know that machines will inevitably encounter various issues during use. But do you know why gearboxes leak oil? Here are four aspects to consider.

1. Pressure differences occur inside and outside the reducer

During the operation of the reducer, frictional heat from the moving parts and the influence of environmental temperature cause the reducer's temperature to rise. If there are no ventilation holes or the ventilation holes are blocked, the internal pressure of the reducer will gradually increase. The higher the internal temperature, the greater the pressure difference with the outside, leading to the lubricant leaking out from the gaps under the pressure difference.

2. The reducer structural design is not reasonable.

The inspection revealed that the cover plates for the inspection holes are too thin, which, upon tightening the bolts, can easily deform, leading to an uneven mating surface and oil leakage through the contact gaps.

2) In the manufacturing process of deceleration mechanisms, casting parts have not been subjected to annealing or aging treatment, and internal stresses have not been relieved, which inevitably leads to deformation, gaps, and subsequent leakage.

3) Without a return oil groove on the housing, lubricating oil accumulates in the shaft seal, end cover, and mating surfaces. Under the action of pressure difference, it leaks out from the gaps.

4) Inadequate shaft seal design. Early reducers often utilized oil groove and felt ring shaft seal structures, which, during assembly, compress the felt causing deformation and seal the joint surface gaps. If the shaft collar does not have an ideal contact with the sealing component, due to the poor compensating performance of the felt, the seal fails within a short period. Although there are return oil holes on the oil groove, they are prone to clogging, making the return oil function difficult to activate.

3. Excessive fueling

During operation, the oil sump is vigorously agitated, causing the lubricating oil to spray throughout the machine. Overfilling the oil can lead to excessive accumulation of lubricant in areas such as the shaft seal and joint surfaces, resulting in leaks.

4. Inadequate maintenance procedures

During equipment maintenance, oil leakage can also occur due to insufficient cleaning of debris on the mating surfaces, improper selection of sealing glue, reverse installation of sealing components, or failure to replace seals in a timely manner.

Why Gearboxes Leak Oil. When using any machinery or equipment, thorough preparation is a must. Always ensure that the machine is operational and meets all standards to avoid frequent repairs and extend the lifespan of the equipment.
