Phthalate (phthalate esters) issues have become a hot topic in the Chinese liquor industry. Comprehensive testing of a large number of liquor products across the nation has revealed that most contain phthalate components, with levels ranging from 2.32mg/kg (approximately 8 times over the national limit) to 0.495mg/kg (about 1.7 times over the limit), with an average of 0.537mg/kg (about 2 times over the limit). High-end liquors tend to have higher levels, while lower-end ones have lower levels. Phthalates, also known as plasticizers, are widely used industrial additives for high molecular materials. Adding this substance to plastic processing enhances flexibility and ease of processing, making it legally applicable for industrial use. Starting from May 2011, six types of phthalate esters (DEHP, DINP, DNOP, DBP, DMP, DEP) were detected in Taiwan's food products, with DIDP also found. Since then, the "shadow" effect of phthalates has continued to spread. After numerous cases of excessive phthalates in beverages, liquors, convenience foods, and other items were exposed, the harmful impact has caused many to fear the use of plastics. Excessive phthalates in food can pose severe health risks, leading to endocrine disruption, increased liver and kidney burden, chronic damage to the system and digestive system, and in severe cases, liver cancer. Their toxicity is 20 times that of melamine. On June 1st of last year, the Ministry of Health issued an urgent announcement, listing phthalate esters (also known as phthalates) as potentially illegal additives and easily misused food additives in food products.
