Potential Issues with Powdered Activated Carbon During Use

Powdered activated carbon is widely used in the water purification industry, but it also comes with some common issues, including the following aspects:

Powdered activated carbon may produce fly ash during use, which refers to the activated carbon particles detaching or dispersing into the water, leading to turbidity of the water quality. This may affect the effectiveness of water treatment and subsequent water quality requirements.

2. Fine Powder Dissolution Issue: Due to the small particle size of the powdered activated carbon, some fine powder may not fully settle in water but instead remain suspended, resulting in unclear water quality. This may require additional settling or filtration steps to remove the suspended fine powder.

3. Soluble Substance Release: Certain powdered activated carbon may release some soluble substances, such as organic matter or metal ions, which could have adverse effects on water quality. The release of these substances may be influenced by the source and preparation process of the activated carbon.

4. Saturation and Lifespan Issues: Powdered activated carbon may gradually become saturated after long-term use, leading to reduced adsorption capacity. This necessitates regular replacement or reactivation of the carbon to maintain its adsorption effectiveness. Additionally, improper operation or maintenance may shorten the lifespan of the activated carbon.

5. Adsorption selectivity issues: The adsorption selectivity of powdered activated carbon may be limited, making it difficult to demonstrate adsorption capabilities for certain specific pollutants or solutes. For some particular pollutants, the use of other materials or a combination of different adsorbents may be required.

To address these issues, appropriate measures must be implemented in practice, such as controlling the particle size of activated carbon, employing suitable pretreatment steps, optimizing the dosing and addition methods of activated carbon, and regularly monitoring and maintaining the activated carbon system. Additionally, selecting a reliable supplier with quality assurance and conducting necessary water quality monitoring are also crucial.
