Bursting of metal stamping dies is a common occurrence, but when severe, a single die can split into several pieces. Of course, there are many factors that can cause a die to crack directly, ranging from die design and material selection to the stamping operation process. Below, our editor compiles the reasons for the bursting of metal molds.

◆ Design Craft

Mold strength insufficient, blade spacing too close, mold structure不合理, mold panel number inadequate without padboards and foot pads.

◆ Material supply issues

Pre-production lacks degaussing treatment and there is no waste material returned; during production, there are issues like broken needles and springs, or jamming materials; when assembling molds, there should be no leaks, or clogs, or foot blockages, which is a common occurrence. If the assemblers are not attentive, such as when there are many drop holes or when there are pads on the molds, this situation can easily arise.

◆ Heat Treatment: Deformation Caused by Improper Quenching and Tempering Process

Field experience has demonstrated that the quality of hot processing for molds significantly impacts their performance and service life. Analysis and statistics of mold failure causes reveal that over 40% of mold failure "incidents" are attributed to improper heat treatment.

Improper wire-cutting handling

Incorrect line cutting spacing, failure to process the corners and the deterioration layer of the line cutting, can impact the quality of the cutting. The cutting edges of die molds are often processed using wire cutting. Due to the thermal effects and electrolytic action of wire cutting, a certain thickness of deterioration layer is produced on the mold processing surface, leading to reduced surface hardness and the appearance of microcracks, which causes the wire cutting die to wear prematurely, directly affecting the maintenance of the die cutting clearance and causing the cutting edge to chip easily, thus shortening the lifespan of the mold. Therefore, during wire cutting, it is essential to choose a reasonable electrical specification to minimize the depth of the deterioration layer.

◆ Selection of Punching Machine Equipment

The tonnage of the punch press is insufficient, and the mold adjustment is too deep. The precision and rigidity of stamping equipment (such as presses) are crucial to the lifespan of the stamping dies. Higher precision and better rigidity in stamping equipment significantly increase the lifespan of the dies. For instance, complex silicon steel sheet dies made of Cr12MoV, when used on a standard open die press, have an average re-grinding lifespan of 10,000 to 30,000 times; however, on a new precision press, the re-grinding lifespan of the dies can reach up to 60,000 to 120,000 times.

The analysis of the reasons for the explosion of metal mold stamping shared above, did you find it helpful? Additionally, the production awareness of metal stamping operators is also crucial; if the positioning is not accurate, no blow is used, or the mold has cracks and production continues, it can also have an impact.
