How many types of steel structure component connection design methods are there?

Practical Design Method, Accurate Calculation Design Method, Common Simplification Design Method, and Equal Strength Connection Design Method.


One, practical design methods involve joining sections based on the net cross-sectional area of the connected flanges under equal strength conditions. For the connection of the webs, in addition to calculating the shear force acting on the joint location, it should also be determined by the shear-bearing capacity of 1/2 of the web's net cross-sectional area or the sum of bending moments at both ends of the component, divided by the component's net span length.


The Accurate Calculation Design Method distributes the bending moment at the section according to the proportional moment of inertia of the connected components' flanges and webs, while the shearing force is entirely borne by the webs.


The common simplified design method involves designing the connection by having the flanges of the components bear all the bending moments, while the webs bear all the shearing forces.


Four, the equal strength design method involves joining the connected flanges or webs based on the condition of equal strength of the net cross-sectional area. The design principles for seismic joints, in addition to clearly defining forces, reducing stress concentration, and facilitating processing and installation, also emphasize the principle of strong connections with weak components to avoid overall structural failure due to weaker connections. The purpose of the equal strength connection design method is to make the load-bearing capacity of the component connections equal to or greater than the component's load-bearing capacity. Therefore, the equal strength connection design method is commonly used in the design of component joints for structures designed for seismic or elastic-plastic purposes, ensuring the continuity of components and good ductility.
