In the engineering specifications for steel structure design, the material for welded steel structures is only identified by the steel model, without specifying the quality grade requirements. Regarding the weld quality, some do not clearly state the quality grade, while others propose inappropriate grades.
As China's reform and opening-up progresses, the construction industry has gradually aligned with international practices post-accession to the WTO. Some large public construction projects in China are now open to international bidding, with some winning proposals coming from foreign design firms. While some of these winning proposals showcase innovative designs, they have also sparked considerable controversy. Particularly, some winning proposals exhibit structures that are not only unreasonably designed but also extremely impractical.
In the design of components, the on-site construction conditions were not considered. Some components are too long, and transportation conditions cannot address this issue. Others are too heavy, and the on-site lifting capacity cannot meet the requirements, etc.
In the design of friction-type high-strength bolt connections, the specifications and quantities of the bolts at a connection node are determined by the node internal force calculations. However, some designs do not match the diameter and quantity of the high-strength bolts selected with the cross-sectional dimensions of the node plate. Under the design ultimate load, this may result in the bolts not reaching the designed strength while the connection flange has deformed, leading to a loss of load-bearing capacity.
When setting up lateral support components and the connection between beams and columns, the operational space for the bolt wrench tool was not considered when using bolted joints, which posed difficulties for construction.
Six, insufficient emphasis on waterproofing, thermal insulation, and corrosion resistance in steel structure design; lack of clear specifications for the rust removal grade of steel, paint types, and coating thickness in design documents; failure to implement appropriate thermal insulation measures based on the varying fire resistance limits of components in different parts.
