Functional masterbatch refers to a type of masterbatch with special functions. The concentrated form of various plastic additives is difficult to disperse directly and has low efficiency, hence often added in the form of masterbatch. Functional masterbatch (such as anti-aging agents, anti-static agents, flame retardants, fillers, etc.) is a masterbatch containing other functional additive components in addition to color. The specific functions depend entirely on the effective ingredients contained.
The functional masterbatch's functions can be simply categorized into three major categories: enhancing the processing performance of plastic molding, improving the physical and chemical properties of plastic, and adding functional applications to the product.
Enhanced plastic molding processing performance
Cooling masterbatch for reducing molding processing temperature; smooth masterbatch for easy ejection of injection molded parts; anti-adhesive masterbatch to prevent film from sticking together during unwinding. Utilizing these functional masterbatches simplifies molding processing operations, enhances product quality, and boosts production efficiency while reducing energy consumption.
Enhance the physical and chemical properties of plastics
Antioxidant masterbatches for improved heat aging resistance and color yellowing inhibition in products; anti-aging masterbatches for enhanced weather resistance of finished parts; toughening masterbatches to improve the mechanical properties of molded parts; slip masterbatches to reduce the surface friction coefficient of molded parts; and opening masterbatches to decrease the torque required to open bottle caps, etc.
3. Enhanced product application features
Antistatic masterbatches for reducing the surface resistance of molded parts; flame-retardant masterbatches for enhancing material fire resistance; antibacterial masterbatches for increasing plastics' resistance to microbial attack; barrier masterbatches for improving the gas-blocking properties of plastic packaging materials; and anti-dew masterbatches for reducing fog on the inner surface of food packaging films.
Classification of Functional Masterbatches
Smooth Mother Particle: Adjusts smoothness and anti-adhesion properties, offering excellent anti-adhesion performance and increased smoothness without affecting strength and dimensional stability at high temperatures.
2. Open Mouth Granules: Enhance the smoothness of the film surface and possess certain antistatic properties, preventing adhesion between films, while also improving the opening of the tube film.
3. Anti-aging Masterbatch: Extends the service life of films by absorbing and blocking ultraviolet rays that cause film aging. Main components include: light stabilizers, ultraviolet absorbers, and thermal aging protectants.
4. Rust-Proof Masterbatch: Prevents plastic components from rusting and powdering at contact points with metal fittings.
5. Absorbent Masterbatch (Moistureproof, Anti-Bubble Masterbatch): Eliminates issues caused by moisture such as bubbles, clouding, cracks, and spots, without adversely affecting the physical and mechanical properties of the product.
6. Degradable Masterbatch: Widely used in primary raw materials such as PE and PP, it enables the products (such as agricultural films, bags, cups, plates, and dishes) to degrade naturally after use, posing no pollution to the natural environment.
7. Scented Masterbatch: Offers a lasting fragrance up to 10-12 months, suitable for packaging applications such as toys, daily essentials, stationery, and automotive interior products.
8. Transparent Masterbatch: Enhances Product Transparency.
9. Foam Masterbatch: Eliminates surface shrinkage marks and dents on the product, reduces weight through foaming, while also lowering raw material costs.
10. Cooling Masterbatch: Primarily used for PP, it can effectively reduce temperatures by approximately 30-50°C.
11. Filler Masterbatch: In addition to calcium carbonate, fillers for plastic products include talc, dolomite, graphite, kaolin, mica, and other inorganic mineral materials; they are widely used in various plastic products such as PE, PP, PS, ABS, etc.
Anti-static Masterbatch: It is obtained by high-speed mixing, extrusion molding, and granulating the carrier and anti-static system, used to reduce the surface resistance of materials and prevent the adverse effects of static electricity on various industrial sectors and humans.
13. Antimicrobial Masterbatch: By blending a certain amount of antimicrobial masterbatch with corresponding resin particles and then processing them according to the molding methods for plastics and fibers, surface-antimicrobial plastic articles, products, and antimicrobial fibers can be produced.
14. Enhanced Masterbatch: This material strengthens targeted materials, and its modified form is widely applicable across industries such as construction, machinery, electronics, electrical appliances, automotive, transportation, daily commodities, and agriculture.
15. Brightening Masterbatch: Also known as glossy masterbatch, its purpose is to enhance the brightness of the product. The main brightening agent is ethylene bis-stearamine, typically used in color masterbatch at 20%-30%, and in the product itself at 0.2%-0.3%. Excessive use can affect the printing quality of the product.
16. Flame Retardant Masterbatch: Primarily used for flame retardant modification, composed of flame retardant, resin, and additives.
