There are many factors that can lead to motor failure, and here are five common causes. However, these issues can be prevented by proper usage, maintenance, and environmental management of the motor.
Overheating
Overheating is a primary fault in motors. In fact, the other four reasons listed in this article are partly due to the heat they generate. Theoretically, every 10°C increase in heat reduces the lifespan of the winding insulation by half. Therefore, ensuring that motors operate at the correct temperature is the main way to extend their lifespan.
2. Improper lubrication is a matter of balance; both over-lubrication and insufficient lubrication can be harmful. Additionally, be mindful of contamination issues within the lubricant and ensure the lubricant used is suitable for the task at hand.
3. Power supply issues
Harmonic currents caused by high-frequency switching and pulse width modulation can lead to voltage and current distortion, overload, and overheating, thereby shortening the lifespan of motors and components and increasing long-term equipment costs. Additionally, electrical surges themselves can cause excessive and low voltage levels. To address this issue, continuous monitoring and inspection of the power supply conditions are essential.
4. Moisture
Moisture itself can erode motor components. When combined with airborne particulate pollutants, it is a fatal blow to the motor, further shortening the pump's lifespan.
5. Dust and airborne pollutants, including various suspended particles, can enter the motor interior, leading to various harmful corrosive particles that may wear down components and conductive particles that may disrupt component currents. Once particles block the cooling channels, they can accelerate overheating. Clearly, choosing the correct IP protection rating can significantly alleviate this issue.
These issues are all interrelated, making it challenging to address just one of them effectively. Therefore, proper use and maintenance of the motor, as well as effective environmental management, are crucial!
