Currently, there are three common operating modes, namely, drive operation, ground control operation, and remote operation, which are selected based on the specific conditions of the crane.

The driving mode is operated by the operator within the cabin of the gantry crane. Since the cabin is generally positioned at the middle height of the gantry crane, the operator's view and line of sight are somewhat restricted, which makes the lifting operation more susceptible to safety hazards. Additionally, an extra ground commander is required to assist with the operation.
