Is thicker oil always better for air compressor use?

Compressed air lubricating oil serves multi-faceted functions such as cooling, sealing, and lubrication, being an essential product throughout the operation of a compressor. A good lubrication effect not only maximizes the overall performance of the compressor unit, enhancing equipment efficiency, but also reduces the failure rate and maintenance costs. Therefore, the selection of lubricating oil is a matter of serious consideration for compressor users, as it impacts the normal operation of the equipment and the smooth progress of production.

The lubricating oil for air compressors must achieve a certain viscosity to meet the required lubrication, sealing, and cooling effects. Oil with too low a viscosity does not form a sufficiently strong oil film, which accelerates wear and shortens the service life of the components. So, is it better for the lubricating oil to be more粘? The answer is definitely no.

Although higher viscosity lubricants and thicker oil films can help prevent wear on friction surfaces, they also increase frictional resistance and lead to higher power losses, thereby raising the compressor's specific power.

Using thick lubricating oil, starting in low temperatures, due to a period of downtime, the lubricant on the friction surfaces has been depleted. The thick viscosity and slow flow prevent it from promptly replenishing on the friction surfaces to form a lubricating film. Consequently, this leads to prolonged dry and semi-dry friction states in the machinery components, resulting in increased wear and tear.

High viscosity lubricating oil requires more volume for the same lubricating effect, thereby increasing fuel consumption. Selecting a lower viscosity lubricating oil under the condition of ensuring lubrication can achieve the goal of saving fuel.

In summary, the thicker the oil, the better it is not necessarily true for air compressor oil. As they say, too much of a good thing can be bad. An excessively high viscosity does not achieve the intended lubrication effect but can actually lead to equipment wear and unnecessary waste. Aik Air Compressors reminds you that moderation is key in all things, and this applies to the lubricant for air compressors as well.
