A grit collector, also known as a slag collector, is an essential piece of equipment for cleaning the steam system of new or reconditioned reheating units. It prevents damage to turbine blades caused by debris left in the steam system during manufacturing, transportation, storage, and construction, as well as rust that may form within the pipes, ensuring the unit's safety and economic operation.
The cleaning of steam systems was traditionally conducted in stages. To prevent dirt from the superheater system from entering the reheater, the superheater system is cleaned first. Steam flushing of the pipes is mandatory before the unit starts up to ensure the safe operation of the turbine equipment. After the temporary blowdown control valve, a grit collector is installed. Industrial waste within the pipes is then removed through the drain device, thus preventing the waste from entering the related systems.
