Gear coupling

The drum gear coupling has a small radial size and high load-bearing capacity, and is commonly used in shaft transmission for low-speed, heavy-load operating conditions. High-precision drum gear couplings that have been dynamically balanced are suitable for high-speed transmission, such as in the shaft systems of gas turbines. Due to the greater angular compensation of the drum gear couplings compared to straight drum gear couplings, drum gear couplings are widely used globally, while straight drum gear couplings are considered obsolete and should be avoided if possible.

Common couplings in the market include general structure toothed couplings, drum toothed couplings, nylon toothed couplings, etc. Among them, drum toothed couplings come in many models and are widely used.

Misalignment of couplings is divided into angular misalignment, parallel misalignment, and composite misalignment. There are over a hundred varieties of gear couplings in the form of a drum, but they essentially come down to just two basic types:1. Internal and external tooth combination; 2. End face tooth combination. Other forms are variations based on these two. The toothed clutch with internal and external tooth combination can transmit a larger torque. Considering different user needs, it is intentionally designed with unequal lengths on the shaft ends of the teeth, allowing users to choose the installation direction as required. Therefore, there is no specification for which end faces which direction.

The outer spline sleeve of the drum-type spline coupling is machined into an arc shape, which means the blank is machined into a spherical surface. Within the cross-section that is tangent to the center plane of the spline and the cylindrical surface of the joint, the teeth form a drum shape, known as a drum-type coupling. Its characteristics are:

High load-bearing capacity; calculated by bending strength, under the same conditions, the torque transmitted by the curved-tooth drum-type coupling is 15-30% higher than that of the straight-tooth drum-type coupling.

Reasonably structured and reliable in performance, the gear side's drum-like shape improves the contact condition under certain angular conditions, thereby reducing contact stress and eliminating the concentrated load at the end of the straight tooth coupling, i.e., eliminating edge extrusion, and enhancing operational performance.

3. Excellent compensating performance; the external toothed sleeve teeth are in a drum shape, increasing the allowable relative offset between the two connected shafts. The allowable tilt angle can reach 6 degrees, generally recommended between 1.5° to 2.5°.
