When Big Leaf privet balls are harvested and not immediately planted, the seedlings or their roots should be temporarily buried in moist soil. This process is known as staking, which is divided into temporary staking and temporary staking.
Temporary seedling transplanting refers to the short-term planting done after seedlings are harvested. Seedlings that cannot be transplanted in the same year after harvesting in autumn and are instead overwintered through this method are called temporary seedling transplanting, also known as overwintering seedling transplanting.
Select a location with high terrain, good drainage, and sheltered from wind to plant Buxus sinica 'Platycladus' balls. Dig a trench perpendicular to the prevailing wind direction, with the trench size depending on the tree size. Generally, the trench should be 20-100 cm deep and 100 cm wide, with the windward side wall sloped at a 45-degree angle.
Temporary planting involves bundling seedlings and placing them in a trench, covering the roots with moist soil; for temporary planting, individual seedlings should be placed on an inclined wall, with the root system and lower part of the seedling buried in moist soil. Securely bind them to ensure the roots are tightly connected with the soil.
If the soil in the artificial planting trench becomes dry, it should be watered moderately after planting, but avoid overwatering as it can cause root rot. In cold regions, to prevent frost damage, cover the above-ground parts of the seedlings with straw bags, straw, etc. In areas in the south where winter winds are not strong, to save space, the seedlings can be planted upright and soil can be added from both sides of the trench.
After the Buxus sinica 'Jin Nong' ball planting is completed, make sure to label it with the species, seedling age, and quantity for easy management. During the planting period, it is essential to inspect frequently, especially in early spring; in areas prone to wind and sand, windbreaks should be set up on the windward side.
