How to Evaluate a System's Power Requirements

For a real electronic system, it is crucial to meticulously analyze its power requirements. This involves not only considering input voltage, output voltage, and current, but also carefully evaluating total power consumption, the efficiency of the power implementation, the transient response capability of the power section to load changes, the tolerance range of critical components to power fluctuations, along with the allowable power ripple, and various thermal dissipation issues. Power consumption and efficiency are closely related; higher efficiency results in less total power consumption under the same load power, which is highly beneficial for the overall system's power budget. Compared to LDOs and switching power supplies, switching power supplies generally offer higher efficiency. Additionally, when assessing efficiency, it is not only important to consider the efficiency of the power circuit under full load, but also to pay attention to the efficiency levels under light load conditions.

For load transient response capabilities, stringent requirements are placed on high-performance CPU applications. This is because when the CPU suddenly begins running heavy tasks, a significant startup current is required. If the power circuit's response speed is insufficient, it can cause a sudden drop in voltage that is too low, leading to errors in CPU operation. Aviation ground power, 2 x 36V aviation power, 1 x 400Hz variable frequency power supply, 2 x 115/200V power supply, 5 x 27V DC power supply, 12 x 400Hz power supplies, aviation power supply.

Generally, the required power supply actual value is often ±5% of the nominal value, so the allowable power supply ripple can be calculated accordingly, with a margin of safety. Heat dissipation is particularly important for high current power supplies and LDOs, as it can also be assessed through calculation for suitability.
