Direct Current (DC) Voltage Stabilizer Brief Overview

A DC stabilizing power supply is an electronic device that provides a stable direct current (DC) power source to the load. The power supply for most DC stabilizing power supplies is AC, and when the voltage of the AC power supply or the load resistance changes, the DC output voltage of the stabilizer remains stable.

As electronic devices trend towards stability, stringent requirements have been placed on their power supply sources. Factors such as environmental temperature, load size, and input voltage all cause variations in the output voltage of DC regulated power supplies. The impact of input voltage changes on output voltage can be expressed by voltage stability. It represents the relative change in output voltage due to variations within the rated ±10% range of input voltage, while the remaining parameters affecting the output voltage change are kept constant and the output current is at the rated value. Similar methods can be used to express the stability of environmental temperature and load fluctuations. Additionally, in the rated operating condition, the ripple coefficient indicating the size of the AC component in the output voltage and the response speed of the voltage returning to the original normal value when input voltage or load changes abruptly are also important quality indicators of DC regulated power supplies. Basic circuit diagram of a continuous conduction mode voltage regulator. The transformer steps down single-phase or three-phase AC power to an appropriate value, which is then converted to an unstable DC power after rectification and filtering. This unstable DC power is further stabilized to a constant voltage or current through a voltage regulation circuit. The drawback of this method is that the stability coefficient must be increased by adding series resistance, and the input voltage must be significantly higher than the output voltage. It is a series adjustment method. The error amplifier amplifies the difference between the sampled voltage and the reference voltage, controlling the voltage drop of the series adjustment element to stabilize the output voltage (or current).

The continuous-conduction-mode voltage regulators offer advantages such as simple circuitry, low ripple, and minimal mutual interference; however, they have drawbacks including large size, high consumption of materials, and low efficiency. Due to the series resistors in the parallel adjustment method and the adjustable elements in the series adjustment method, all pass through the load current, resulting in high power consumption and efficiency often below 40-60%. The working principle of the switch-mode voltage regulators is illustrated herein.

Adjusting the on-off time ratio of the switching element (switch) can regulate the output voltage U, thereby achieving the purpose of voltage stabilization. Due to the element being in a saturated state when conducting, the power consumption is low, and the efficiency can reach about 85%. Switched-mode power supplies have developed rapidly since the 1980s, with a wide variety of types.
