The Difference Between DC and AC Power

What is the difference between DC and AC power sources? The direction and magnitude of the current in a DC regulated power supply remain stable and unchanged, while the direction and magnitude of the current in AC power vary with time, exhibiting regular changes. The current-voltage function graph of a DC regulated power supply is a straight line, whereas the current-voltage function graph of AC power is a curved line. Direct current refers to direction, with both magnitude and direction remaining stable.

Direct current refers to a steady direction and magnitude, as a type of alternating current, it maintains constant magnitude and direction without changing over time. In contrast, the other type refers to both dimensions changing with time; the power supply and distribution systems we commonly use undergo regular transformations. Each has its own advantages and disadvantages, and due to these factors, they are suitable for different applications. Direct current means that both magnitude (working voltage) and direction (positive/negative) do not change with time (within a relative range), such as batteries. Pulsed alternating current maintains a constant direction (positive/negative) but its magnitude changes over time.

Difference between DC Stabilized Power Supply and AC

Direct current (DC) stabilized power supplies maintain their orientation relatively stable over time, making them a crucial characteristic in electronic products. To ensure reliability, it is essential to adopt such power supplies. As a result, other components are needed to induce specific changes. Moreover, these power supplies generate a relatively stable electromagnetic field, which is frequently used in critical automatic control systems, such as power distribution stations and mobile communication base stations.

Alternating current refers to an electrical flow that undergoes regular changes in magnitude and direction at any given time. It can be altered using transformers, but not all types can be transformed at a single point. Therefore, for long-distance electromagnetic energy transmission, we opt for the variable type, primarily because the cables are extremely long, which leads to significant resistance and power loss. To mitigate this, it is necessary to increase the output voltage. Alternating current is generated by DC motors, where multiple magnetic poles are evenly distributed around a circle at a specific angle. During the generation process, each coil cuts through magnetic flux lines, and due to the presence of multiple poles, the voltage and current generated by each pair of poles change in a sinusoidal pattern, thus producing a continuous and stable electrical flow. Ultimately, at the terminal, transformers are used to convert the high voltage into a more suitable working voltage. It is for this reason that we employ high-voltage AC transmission and distribution methods over long distances.
