The primary types of aircraft power systems include low-voltage DC power systems, variable speed-frequency AC power systems, constant speed-frequency AC power systems, the new variable speed constant frequency AC power systems, and high-voltage DC power systems. What are the characteristics (advantages and disadvantages) of low-voltage DC power systems?
Advantages: Can serve as a starting generator, reducing the weight of onboard equipment.
Shortcomings: 1) Low voltage and high current, leading to heavy generators and transmission lines.
2) Poor high-altitude performance. (Due to the rise in altitude, the air becomes thinner, causing increased wear and tear on the brushes and commutator, leading to a shorter lifespan. As speed increases, the air flow temperature rises, and DC generators rely on the windward side air flow for cooling, resulting in poor heat dissipation.)
3) Power conversion equipment (DC-AC) is complex and inefficient.
