Are PEX pipes prone to bursting?

When it comes to selecting pipe materials, safety and peace of mind are paramount, and we certainly don't want any burst pipe incidents. Polyethylene (PE) water pipes are commonly used, but are they prone to bursting? Let's find out together.

Polyethylene (PE) pipes utilize PE material, which boasts high strength, corrosion resistance, and non-toxic properties, and are extensively used in urban water supply, agricultural irrigation, and building heating systems. The unique flexibility of PE material allows it to effectively withstand underground movement and end loads. On the surface, plastic buried pipes are less strong and rigid than concrete pipes and metal pipelines. However, in practical applications, plastic buried pipes are classified as "flexible pipes." With proper design and construction, plastic buried pipes can bear loads together with the surrounding soil. Therefore, plastic buried pipes do not need to achieve the same level of strength and rigidity as "rigid pipes" to meet the mechanical performance requirements for underground use.

Meanwhile, the stress relaxation characteristic of polyethylene can effectively dissipate stress through deformation, with its actual axial stress level significantly lower than the theoretical calculated value. Moreover, its elongation at break is generally greater than 500%, and the bending radius can be as small as 20 to 25 times the diameter of the pipe. This makes it a highly ductile material with a strong ability to adapt to uneven ground settlement. These features make it an excellent pipeline for withstanding earthquakes, ground settlement, and temperature expansion.
