The rail-mounted container gantry crane is composed of the main beam, rigid and flexible leg sections, running trolley, lifting mechanism, trolley running mechanism, electrical system, and operator cabin. Generally, rail-mounted container gantry cranes require a larger clear width inside the leg sections, thus featuring an open U-shaped top on the legs, connected at the top, and equipped with a trolley maintenance platform.

The rail-mounted container gantry crane is capable of handling 20', 40', and 45' international standard containers. It comes in two lifting capacities: typically 30.5t and 40.5t. The span varies depending on the site, container storage and handling process, and the type of transport vehicle, ranging from 26m to 30m to 35m. The crane structures include options for no jib, single jib, and double jib. The lifting height options are stacking three containers over four levels or four over five. The rotation methods include upper trolley rotation and lower lifting device rotation.
