The shaped pine trees stand tall and robust, evergreen throughout the year, and possess great aesthetic value. These shaped pines can be interplanted with fast-growing trees along roadsides, offering advantages such as the straight trunk of the pine, its bending branches in various shapes, the willow trees providing a backdrop, distinct layers in the canopy, and a rich variety of colors. Some shaped pines are planted on the inner side of sidewalks or in median strips, with fast-growing trees on the vehicle side. This arrangement helps protect the soil from damage and trampling by vehicles and pedestrians, promoting the growth of the pines. At the shaped pine base, when selecting young seedlings, they always choose those with good shape and posture. Additionally, they require some pruning to enhance survival rates and make the posture more elegant and aesthetically pleasing.
The lateral branches of the oil pine seedlings are irregularly arranged around the main trunk, with a large number of them. If the spacing between them is too small, it will lead to dense tree crowns, uneven nutrient distribution, and unbalanced growth. The purpose of pruning and shaping at Hongshengyuan Jing Song is to arrange the lateral branches in layers on the main trunk, with 4 to 6 branches per layer, extending in different directions, with an interval of 30 to 50 centimeters between layers. All selected lateral branches are preserved and their new shoots are to be maintained. For the thicker branches within the layer that were not selected as lateral branches, they should be pruned short first, nurtured for a period, and then disposed of. Other branches are appropriately thinned out.
The lower lateral branches of the shaped pine seedlings are long, gradually shortening upwards, while the lateral branches at the same level must grow evenly to form a beautiful tree shape. Therefore, during shaping and pruning, attention should be paid to ensure the balanced growth of all lateral branches. When balancing the tree's structure, stronger branches can be trimmed back, and weaker parallel branches or drooping branches can be selected to replace them. Some black pine seedlings have their top tips not properly aligned, causing nutrients to be dispersed to the lower large lateral branches, resulting in the upper lateral branches not extending when grown, with the lower branches growing vigorously, affecting the aesthetic value. This leads to an excessive growth of lower lateral branches in the shaped pine seedlings, while the upper lateral branches are very weak, creating an unattractive canopy with strong lower and weak upper parts. Therefore, adjustments and pruning are necessary.
