Scorching is the process of rapidly passing a fabric width through flames or across a hot metal surface to burn off the surface fuzz, resulting in a smooth and clean fabric surface to prevent defects during subsequent processing.
How to singe? Singeing is a process that involves passing fabric through a flame or over a hot metal surface to remove the surface fluff and achieve a smooth, clean finish. The fluff on the fabric surface, being close to the flame and in a loose state, burns quickly. The fabric itself, being more dense and thick, and further from the flame, heats up more slowly and is removed from the flame or hot metal surface before reaching the ignition point. This principle of different heating rates between the fabric and the fluff ensures that only the surface fluff is burned without damaging the fabric. During singeing, the temperature for different fiber materials varies, so it's essential to understand the thermal properties of various fibers. Caution: Too low temperature (under-singeing) results in incomplete burning, ball-shaped fluff, and color spots during dyeing. Too high temperature or slow speed (over-singeing) causes heat shrinkage in the fabric, leading to wrinkles, a hard feel, and shrinkage in the width. Key points: High temperature (beneficial for singeing) and fast speed (protects the fabric) to ensure that only the fluff is burned without affecting the fabric itself.
