The twill weave is characterized by a stepped arrangement of weft floats in the warp direction or vice versa, forming continuous diagonal lines on the fabric surface. Each warp thread moves in the same way, but starts at a different point.
Characteristics: The diagonal weave is categorized into warp-faced, weft-faced, and two-sided diagonal weaves. When the warp structure points predominate on the fabric surface, such as in a 2/1 weave, it is a warp-faced diagonal weave. Conversely, when the weft structure points predominate, like in a 1/3 weave, it is a weft-faced diagonal weave. The reverse of a warp-faced diagonal weave is a weft-faced diagonal weave with the opposite diagonal direction. Both sides have the same ratio of structure points but opposite diagonal directions, known as two-sided diagonal weaves. The degree of inclination of the diagonal lines also varies. The diagonal weave's angle of inclination is represented by the angle α between the diagonal line and the horizontal line. As α increases, it indicates a higher warp density and steeper diagonal lines. Diagonal weaves with α > 45° are called sharp diagonal weaves, those with α < 45° are called gentle diagonal weaves, and when α = 45°, it signifies equal warp and weft densities. Diagonal weaves have fewer interlacing points than plain weaves, have floating lengths, and result in softer, thicker fabric with better luster, although they are not as durable as plain weave fabrics. The clarity and prominence of the diagonal lines on the surface can be achieved by selecting the twist direction and the ratio of warp and weft densities, resulting in either clear and distinct or full and prominent, uniform and straight patterns. Common diagonal weave fabrics include plain diagonal cloth, twill, gabardine, and the prominent khaki and herringbone weaves.
