The twill weave is characterized by a stepped arrangement of weft floats that are either longer than warp floats or vice versa, creating continuous diagonal lines on the fabric surface. Each warp thread moves in the same way, but with a different starting point.
Characteristics: There are three types of twill weave: warp-faced, weft-faced, and double-faced twill. When the warp structure points predominate on the fabric surface, such as a 2/1 twill, it is a warp-faced twill. Conversely, when the weft structure points are in the majority, like a 1/3 twill, it is a weft-faced twill. The reverse of a warp-faced twill is a weft-faced twill with the opposite direction. Both sides have the same proportion of structure points but opposite directions, known as double-faced twill. The degree of inclination of the twill lines also varies. The angle of inclination of the twill weave is represented by the angle α between the twill line and the horizontal line. As α increases, it indicates a higher warp density and steeper lines. Twills with α > 45° are called sharp twills, those with α < 45° are called mild twills, and when α = 45°, it indicates equal warp and weft densities. Twill weave has fewer interlacing points than plain weave, has floating lengths, and produces a softer, thicker fabric with better luster. However, it is less durable than plain weave. The clarity and prominence of the twill lines on the surface can be achieved by selecting the twist direction and the ratio of warp to weft densities, resulting in either clear and distinct or full and prominent, uniform and straight patterns.
