Burnishing is a process that involves rapidly passing fabric through the flames of a burnishing machine or across a red-hot metal surface to remove the surface fuzz and achieve a smooth, lustrous finish. The fuzz on the fabric surface, being close to the flame and in a loose state, burns quickly. The fabric itself, being denser and thicker, and further from the flame, heats up more slowly and is removed from the flame or red-hot surface before reaching its ignition point. This principle of different heating rates between the fabric and the fuzz allows for the removal of surface fuzz without damaging the fabric. During burnishing, the temperature varies depending on the fiber material, so it is essential to understand the thermal properties of different fiber types.

Caution: Insufficient heat (underheating) results in incomplete drying, with fluff forming into balls and color spots appearing during dyeing. Overheating or slow speed (overheating) causes the fabric to shrink due to heat, leading to wrinkles, a stiff hand feel, and a reduced width.
