The shrinkage rate, which measures the degree of fabric shrinkage, is the result of the fabric freely contracting in water while in a completely relaxed state during the washing process in a drum washing machine. Not only does the shrinkage occur in pre-dyed and finished fabrics and garments during relaxed washing, but it also happens in newly knitted blanks when soaked in water in a completely relaxed state, resulting in dimensional shrinkage, known as shrinkage. The shrinkage process of knitted fabrics during water washing or relaxation treatment in water is a combined result of fiber shrinkage, yarn shrinkage, and fabric structure shrinkage.

Fiber Shrinkage

In spinning, fiber spinning (chemical fibers), weaving, and high-tension finishing processes, fibers elongate due to external force and form internal stress within the fibers. The drying action under tension and the inter-fiber cohesion, as well as the interfilament entanglement resistance, temporarily fix this elongation and internal stress. When treated with water or steam, water molecules weaken the interaction between the macromolecular chains of the fibers, lowering the receding barrier of the macromolecular chain segments. Under the action of internal stress, the fibers will shrink. In long fiber fabrics, yarns with low twist, and regenerated cellulose fiber fabrics, during wet finishing processes (such as scouring and dyeing), fibers are easily elongated by external force, resulting in significant shrinkage. Cotton knitted fabrics, if the scouring and dyeing process uses a loose processing method, the fibers will not be stretched, and the shrinkage rate caused by fiber reasons will be minimal. However, if a processing method with high tension is used, a significant fiber shrinkage rate will occur. It is crucial to note that fiber deformation caused by external stretching is difficult to recover due to the inter-fiber cohesion and the interfilament entanglement (loop-to-loop junction) resistance. Therefore, attention must be paid to controlling the external stretching force during the scouring and dyeing process of cotton knitted fabrics.
