Lyocell fiber is a man-made cellulose fiber produced from natural cellulose polymers. Invented by Courtaulds plc in the UK, it was later manufactured by Lenzing AG of Switzerland. It is marketed under the name Tencel, with its Chinese name, "Tiensi," being a phonetic equivalent.
Lyocell is a novel cellulose fiber produced by dissolving wood pulp into spinning solution using N-methylmorpholine-N-oxide (NMMO) aqueous solution as the solvent. The fiber is then formed by wet spinning or dry-wet spinning methods using a NMMO-H2O solution of a certain concentration as the coagulation bath. The primary fibers obtained are subsequently stretched, washed, oiled, and dried to produce the final product. This spinning method boasts advantages over the conventional production of viscose fibers, as NMMO can directly dissolve cellulose pulp, significantly simplifying the production process of the spinning stock solution. Moreover, the recovery rate of NMMO can exceed 99%, and the production process is almost pollution-free.
Lyocell fibers differ significantly in morphology and structure from regular viscose, featuring a uniform circular cross-section without a distinct pith and core layer. The longitudinal surface is smooth and free of grooves, boasting superior mechanical properties compared to viscose fibers. They exhibit excellent washing size stability (shrinkage rate only 2%) and high moisture absorption. The fibers have an elegant luster, a soft feel, good drape, and excellent飘逸ness.
