Billions of Romance! Chinese Scientists Develop Pink Cotton
Cotton textile processing requires a large amount of chemical dyes, which pollute the environment and affect health. Creating various colored cotton fibers through genetic engineering can significantly reduce the use of chemical dyes. The existing colored cotton primarily consists of brown and green varieties, offering a relatively limited color range and struggling to meet the diverse needs of people's colorful lives.
The research initially optimized three key genes related to beetroot red pigment synthesis, resulting in new cotton materials rich in beetroot red pigment by using the cotton variety "Zhongmianso 49" as the recipient. Under the control of a constitutive promoter, both cotton fibers and other tissues exhibited a pink phenotype. With a fiber-specific promoter, only the cotton fibers presented a pink color. The content of beetroot red pigment in mature fibers decreased as vacuoles lysed, leading to a lighter color. The next step for researchers will be to further investigate the mechanism behind the stable deposition of beetroot red pigment. This study is the first to introduce beetroot red pigment into cotton and achieve stable expression, marking an initial exploration in synthetic biology research using cotton as a chassis organism, and laying the foundation for creating new types of colored cotton.
