Viscose, also known as cuprammonium rayon, is a major type of man-made fiber. It is produced by alkalizing natural cellulose to form alkali cellulose, which then reacts with CO2 to create cellulose xanthate. This xanthate dissolves in a dilute alkali solution, forming a sticky liquid called viscosa. After undergoing wet spinning and a series of processing steps, the viscosa is transformed into viscose fiber. Its basic composition is (C6H10O5)n. The cross-section of a regular viscose fiber has a serrated core structure with a smooth longitudinal groove, while the cross-section of a high-cellulose fiber lacks this structure and is circular.
Viscose fibers have good hygroscopic properties, with a moisture regain rate of around 13% under normal atmospheric conditions. After absorbing moisture, they significantly expand, with the diameter increasing up to 50%. Consequently, the fabric feels stiff after being soaked, and has a high shrinkage rate.Regular viscose fibers have lower breaking strength compared to cotton, around 1.6~2.7 cN/dtex; their elongation at break is greater than cotton, at 16%~22%; the wet strength drops significantly, about 50% of the dry strength, with an increase in elongation in the wet state of about 50%. Their modulus is lower than cotton, making them prone to deformation under low loads, and they have poor elasticity recovery properties, resulting in fabric elongation and poor size stability. The strength, especially wet strength, of reinforced viscose is higher than that of regular viscose, with a smaller elongation at break and good size stability. Regular viscose has poor wear resistance, while reinforced viscose shows improvement.Viscose fibers have a chemical composition similar to cotton, making them more alkali-resistant but less acid-resistant than cotton. However, their alkali and acid resistance are still inferior to cotton. Rich fibers, on the other hand, exhibit good alkali and acid resistance. Similarly, the dyeing properties of viscose fibers are akin to cotton, with a full color spectrum and excellent dyeing performance. Additionally, the thermal properties of viscose fibers are also similar to cotton, with a density close to cotton, ranging from 1.50 to 1.52 g/cm3.Regular viscose fibers have good moisture absorption, are easy to dye, resist static electricity, and possess good spinnability. Short fibers can be spun alone or blended with other textile fibers, resulting in soft, smooth, and breathable fabrics that are comfortable to wear. After dyeing, the colors are vibrant and durable. They are suitable for producing underwear, outerwear, and various decorative items. Long fiber fabrics are lightweight and can be used not only as clothing material but also for making bedding and decorative textiles. The drawbacks of this type of viscose fiber include lower tensile strength, lower wet modulus, higher shrinkage rate, and a tendency to deform easily, with poor elasticity and abrasion resistance.
