Rayon, also known as viscose fiber, is a major variety of man-made fibers. It is produced from natural cellulose through alkalization to form alkali cellulose, which is then processed.CS₂Cellulose xanthate, when dissolved in dilute alkali to form a thick, sticky solution known as粘胶, undergoes wet spinning and a series of processing steps to become粘胶 fiber. Its basic composition is (C6H10O5)n cellulose. The cross-section of ordinary粘胶 fiber is a zigzag skin-core structure, with longitudinal straight grooves. In contrast,富强纤维 lacks a skin-core structure, presenting a circular cross-section.
Viscose fibers have good hygroscopic properties, with a moisture regain rate of about 13% under normal atmospheric conditions. After absorbing moisture, they significantly expand, with the diameter increasing up to 50%. Consequently, fabrics feel stiff and have a high shrinkage rate after being soaked in water.Regular viscose fibers have lower tensile strength than cotton, ranging from 1.6 to 2.7 cN/dtex; their elongation at break is greater than cotton, at 16% to 22%; wet strength decreases significantly, around 50% of dry strength, with elongation increasing by about 50% in the wet state. Their modulus is lower than cotton, making them more prone to deformation under low loads, and they have poor elasticity recovery, leading to easy elongation and poor dimensional stability. The strength, especially wet strength, of enriched fibers is higher than that of regular viscose, with less elongation at break and good dimensional stability. Regular viscose has poor wear resistance, while enriched fibers show improvement in this aspect.Viscose fibers have a chemical composition similar to cotton, making them more alkaline-resistant but acidic-sensitive, with both resistance levels inferior to cotton. Viscose fibers, however, exhibit good resistance to both alkaline and acidic substances. Similarly, the dyeing properties of viscose fibers are akin to cotton, offering a full spectrum of colors and excellent dyeing performance. Moreover, the thermal properties of viscose fibers are also similar to cotton, with a density of approximately 1.50~1.52g/cm³.Regular viscose fibers have good moisture absorption, are easy to dye, are not prone to static electricity, and possess good spinnability. Short fibers can be spun into yarns on their own or blended with other textile fibers, resulting in fabrics that are soft, smooth, breathable, comfortable to wear, and with vibrant colors and good color fastness after dyeing. They are suitable for producing underwear, outerwear, and various decorative items. The long fibers are lightweight and can be used not only as clothing material but also for making bedspreads and decorative fabrics. However, the drawbacks of this type of viscose fiber include lower tensile strength, lower wet modulus, higher shrinkage rate, and a tendency to deform easily, as well as poor elasticity and wear resistance.
