Harvesting cotton not only depends on the fiber length of the cotton but also on the harvesting method, which affects the quality of the cotton. High-quality cotton products are almost all made from handpicked cotton. This is not only because handpicked cotton can preserve the integrity of the fibers but also because the cotton bolls mature from the bottom of the plant upwards. Handpicking allows for the initial collection of the lower cotton, followed by a reharvest a month or two later for the upper cotton. This differs from machine harvesting, which involves uprooting the entire plant, making it more likely to damage the fibers. Additionally, machine oil and dust inside the machinery can contaminate the fibers.
